Tutorial : How to make a KFP karaoke preset?

Before you begin, we advise you to read the How to build your first karaoke tutorial. Indeed, we will not explain the karaoke editor bases, considering they're acquired to you.

We'll start with an empty project, but you could also start with a KFP file downloaded from the karaoke preset page, to familiarize with the preset concept.

Run the KaraFun editor, then click on File / New / KFP Preset (by default, the editor start with an empty KFN karaoke project). The three letters KFP should be displayed in the status bar and the time bars are now enabled.

Notice: unlike a KFN file, a KFP file is not dependant on an audio source. A KFP contains neither an audio source nor synchronized lyrics. The text and the syncs that are displayed are "virtual" and are not saved in the KFP file. They are simply used to check the display when the lines are short or long.

Open the properties and fill the two first fields Name and Author. Select a smart and original title and indicate your name, email or website, and the names of the author of the pictures and fonts you use.

Open the library and drag and drop a background picture. We advise you to use JPG or PNG file (best size is 1024 x 768). You can also add a character font (TTF file) in order to get closer to the style or the world of a specific artist or band.

Step 1: Background picture management

Select the "Background management" track.
Select your file in the combobox.

Such as KFN, you can add events. However, the goal of a KFP file is to go with several karaoke files from a same category (genre or artist), not with one in particular (in this case, the KFN format is more adapted). That's why, events will often be limited to a simple fade in, or an image change at the beginning of the playback.

Step 2: Text display

Select the text subtrack and change some settings :

- The font, the size and the style,
- The color of the text before (inactive) and after (active) the sync. You can also modify the transparency color,
- The speed and text trajectory among the preselected list,
- The text positioning in 3 dimensions
- To apply a fade when the text display starts and ends.
Now, play and check whether the length of text lines exceeds the screen width. Modify the maximum line size of the text properties. Control and adapt the size until you obtain the ideal size...

Step 3: Test, preview picture and properties

Save your KFP preset either in the default preset folder C:\Program Files\KaraFun\Data\Presets (in that case, go in the Preset Options, select the name of your preset and unselect all the others), or in a specific folder with one or several KAR, KOK or LRC files.

Close the Editor and play one of your KAR, KOK or LRC files in KaraFun player. Estimate the readability level of your preset between 1 and 5 (from "Very easy" to "Very hard") according to the font, text size, colors contrast, etc.

In window mode, right-click on the karaoke screen and choose "Half size - 320 x 240". Pause the song at a moment which speaks for itself, and press Alt+J to make a screen shot. It will be your preview picture.

A .jpg file has been saved at the same location of your karaoke file. Run KaraFun editor again, open your KFP file, and add the preview file in the library. Open the properties and select it in the Preview picture list.

Now, select your readability level.

Save your preset, close and quit.
Congratulations! You've done your first KFP!
