Recording SILENCE?

I have occasionally been able to record, most often with some kind of stutter & skip but now nothing. I am recording SILENCE! Even the VU meter shows no reaction when I start to record, even though it is definitely registering when not recording...

I have a setup with a USB Tascam US-122 input/output and a professional mic but no joy. My other music software records through this setup with no problem.
